FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (5-6, 1-2 SSC) will return to the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center to face the Florida Southern Mocs (8-3, 2-1 SSC) Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on 640 Sports.
The Sharks are coming off a loss in an exciting back-and-forth contest against Florida Tech, 88-85. The Sharks led by as much as 11 points in the second half. However, turnovers plagued the squad as the Sharks let the Panthers climb back into the game and take over. The Sharks had the final possession of the game but could not send it into overtime.
Saturday’s challenge will be just as tough as Florida Southern has had the Sharks’ number over the last few years. The Sharks won four straight games against FSC from 2006-2007. However, since Dec. of 2007, NSU has lost ten straight contests against the perennial Sunshine State Conference powerhouse. None of the current Sharks have ever defeated Florida Southern.
Despite dropping three against the Mocs last season, the teams matched up very well which provided three quality games. The best came in late February when FSC escaped the Shark Tank with a 104-103 victory. With only nine players healthy, the Sharks put forth their greatest offensive performance in a SSC game last season. The contest marked the first time in which the Sharks scored over 100 points in an SSC contest, with the previous high being 97 points scored against Tampa on Feb. 3, 2010. The Sharks dropped 51 points in the first half, the most first half points NSU has scored in their NCAA era. The Sharks drained 14 three-pointers in the game, one short of the program record.
Unfortunately, the game was sealed when then senior Terry Jenkins was forced to fade away from 3-point range in the corner to make a miracle game-winner. The Sharks would go on to play a postseason rematch at FSC, but lost to end the season, 79-69.
This year’s squad is a completely different team from last season as only three Sharks,
Jacob Reed (So., Perth, Australia),
Teddy Tassy (Sr., Port-au-Prince, Haiti) and
Lukas Roesch (Jr., Sugar Grove, Ohio), played in that epic contest. Newcomers such as
Tim Traversa (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and
Shaun Pratl (Jr., Chicago Ridge, Ill.) will have their first opportunity to break this long streak against the Mocs.
